Söl´ring Hof Sylt, Teil 2 - Products curated by JOI-Design

About the project: The gourmet restaurant at the Söl'ring Hof, which has held 2 Michelin stars for many years, is known far beyond the borders of the island of Sylt. Love for regional products and an appreciation for nature characterise the young team working with the host and 'culinary engine', as Jan-Philipp Berner calls himself. As the first of a larger catalogue of tasks related to the renovation and revitalisation of this boutique hotel jewel atop of the dune Rantum, we were able to rethink this restaurant and create a long-term vision for its future – here’s a selection of our favourite products:

    Söl´ring Hof Sylt JOI-Design Tresen

Counter cover as a special product, Pyrolave (Germany)

The heart of the new restaurant – designed in cooperation with Jan-Philipp Berner – is a new 'cooking island': located in the centre of the room, it’s primarily used to present culinary masterpieces and for interaction with guests. The inspiration: an oyster from the beach that’s right on the venue’s doorstep. The shell’s organically shaped annual nacre rings are interpreted as a stepped presentation surface and are in direct dialogue with the open kitchen’s pass, which has a more straightforward shape but is constructed from the same special material: glazed volcanic lava stone.

Pendant lamp 'Nuage', Thierry Vidé Paris (France)

Forming a contemporary counterpart to the setting’s historical design features such as the thatched roof, refurbished parquet timber floors, and typical lattice windows, curved pendant lights made from delicate, finely perforated stainless steel further reflect the 'new momentum' already expressed by the organically shaped cooking island.

    Söl´ring Hof Sylt JOI-Design Chair01

Custom-made chair '640', Rolf Benz (Germany)

Chairs in fine dining restaurants must combine many functions: in addition to style that fits with the ambience, they must of course, first and foremost, be comfortable since guests should enjoy sitting in them for a long time. This model also has other advantages: the seat’s shell rotates easily on its frame - this makes it easier to get in and out. A custom feature we added to the design: a pull-out shelf for holding a mobile phone or evening bag so they can be easily accessed without resting on the table.

Barbara Steinmann Manufacturer, Handmade Tiles (Germany)

We love discoveries noticed upon second glance! With so much careful attention given to the new glazed counter surfaces, we also wanted a special solution for the newly tiled walls. These handmade tiles are exactly what we were looking for: captivating with their quiet design language, they depict individual imprints of grasses in relief as an allusion to the surrounding dunes.

    Söl´ring Hof Sylt JOI-Design Light02

Table lamp, 'Lampe Tourbillon' Thierry Vidé Paris (France)

Table lamps are just as important in gourmet restaurants as wall and pendant lights: they emphasise the sense of intimacy and cosiness found in a private home. This model also spans an imaginary arc to the curved chandeliers made from the same material.

Cheese cart, Robbe & Berking (Germany)

There is, of course, an even greater sense of exclusivity when the guests continuously interact with the young chefs and servers: specially developed in close cooperation with Jan-Philipp Berner and his team, this cheese trolley was manufactured by yacht fit-out specialists.

    Söl´ring Hof Sylt JOI-Design Vase

    Vase, Anna Badur (Germany)

However, the ambience is not fully complete with furniture, lighting, surfaces and interior fittings, because it’s the finishing touches that shape the overall final picture: these delicate vases with blue or grey motifs fit perfectly with our design language while reflecting our love of fine porcelain – the tableware of choice for years!
