il Salotto Wines & Resort
In the heart of Italy’s Maremma region, JOI-Design developed a design language for the new estate of il Salotto Wines & Resort, a concept that elegantly translates traditional Tuscan references for modern times. Tuscany’s characteristic architectural style adopts contemporary twists, creating a new building that blends harmoniously with its picturesque surroundings.
By forging this link between the old and the new, the interior design takes guests on a journey of relaxation, enjoyment, and cosiness. In German, the name ‘il Salotto’ translates as ‘living room’ as well as ‘having a good time with friends’. These definitions became the guiding design concept for the stylish and sophisticated interiors of the resort’s four holiday homes as well as its public areas.
Thomas Liebert – Founder and Owner il Salotto Wines & Resort
What was the general premise of the project?
The dream of starting my own winery in Tuscany’s Maremma region originally came to me in 2015. I soon found a neglected winery that, while it hadn’t been operational for seven years, had an unbelievable view and was a perfect location for producing high-quality organic wines.
But 16 hectares had to be replanted and the existing buildings demolished - a huge challenge I didn't want to face alone and therefore put aside. Then came New Year's Eve 2018 when my wife and I were with our best two friends and I broached the subject of the winery again and proposed founding a retirement community together where we could spend time together in nature, harvesting grapes and picking olives. There was no hesitation and from that moment, il Salotto' – ‘The Living Room’ was born.
What did you particularly like about JOI-Design's concept?
It was a stroke of luck that we came across JOI-Design when planning the concept for our interiors. We had our vision, but as is the case everywhere, something special and unique only emerges when professionals are involved, too, and they put the icing on the cake with their ideas.
I remember the first time I went to JOI-Design's Hamburg office to present our interior design ideas and ask if they would be willing to help us. It was immediately apparent that they also fell in love with the location and our ideas for building this small hideaway, and at the same time, we noticed that many new ideas awakened in the minds of JOI-Design's creative team.
Over the next few weeks, JOI-Design turned everything upside down and translated our 'il Salotto' into an incredible resort with the charm of a Tuscan country-house winery mixed with a five-star-plus A-level resort that was second to none - a feel-good living room for us and our guests. There was no better decision for bringing our 'il Salotto' to life than choosing JOI-Design. Our conviction has already been confirmed by numerous highly satisfied guests.
