Moxy Hamburg City Center
The Moxy Hamburg, located directly at the Berliner Tor transportation hub and not far from the main train station and city centre, stands out from other local hotels thanks to its strong, colourful and inspired interiors.
The design team’s goal was to awaken guests’ desire for discovery and put them in the right mood for their Hamburg stay as soon as they enter the lobby. He untreated concrete walls and floors, along with an exposed ceiling, that characterise the casual ‘industrial chic’ typical to Moxy are elevated by a special twists created especially for this location: yellow lines like a zoomed-in map of Hamburg direct guests from space to space, each designed to reflect the different persona of each neighborhood. A tour of the Hanseatic city curated by JOI-Design.
Absolutely eye-catching in the communal lounge: ‘flying carpets’ conceived by the design team. They recall the hustle and bustle of the Speicherstadt district – the traditional hub of the European carpet trade – and give this space a magical cosiness all its own.

What was the general premise of the project?
Each of our Moxys should be recognisable as such yet, at the same time, have its own identity shaped by the destination. In Hamburg, this was achieved in a variety of ways. Rather than focus on the ‘usual’ Hamburg themes, carpets hung from the ceiling playfully highlight the city’s importance as the historic centre of the Asian carpet trade in the Western world. Together with the bright yellow city map graphics on the concrete floor and many other playful details, the hotel is a perfect place for Instagram lovers.
What did you find particularly good about JOI-Design’s concept?
We are proud and excited that our first Moxy Hotel in Hamburg has opened. Moxys should be fun, and ideally, that should start with the design. That it does, and that this spark also spreads to our guests, is demonstrated by the fact that Hamburg is already is the fifth hotel we’ve opened with the JOI-Design team following those in Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Bern.
